CHIEF UDOH ESSIET believes in rhythm. He serves it Hot-and-Spicy on this album, from the depths of his soul to the beat that emanates from his hand-made antelope-skin congas and talking drums.

AFROBEAT HIGHLIFE CROSSING effortlessly blends the essence of Afrobeat and Highlife grooves, resulting in a sound that’s purely original.

The percussion is out of this world, the bass is melodic, the horn arrangements are next level, the BVs are perfect and the ‘Pidgin’ language Chief Udoh sings tops it off with some Nigerian seasoning, like a dash of Hot Pepper on Stew!

about

Sung in Ibibio language of Akwa Ibom State in southeastern Nigeria. About a man suffering while his wife takes advantage of him. He goes to work in rags while his wife dresses in fine clothes and goes out to eat with another man. Finally, he must speak up and tell people to look at what she’s done.

lyrics

(translation from Ibibio language of Nigeria to English)

THE WIFE IS ENJOYING (Mma Akadia Ata)

The husband is wearing ragged clothes to church
His wife is dressed fine
The husband is wearing dirty clothes to work
The wife is out enjoying with her friends
(to the man) If you can’t take it any more, say so.
The wife is dressed fine
(to the man) It isn’t wrong to say you’ve had enough
The wife is out enjoying with her friends
(the man speaks) Do you people see that my wife is coming back with another man?
Even though I work hard and suffer for her
She says she doesn’t want me anymore
My people, she’s come back with another man
Even though I struggle for her
My wife doesn’t want me anymore
My people, she doesn’t want me anymore
